Are there friendship stories for toddlers?

Yes, more than half of this shelf is for ages 0-3. Titles like The Little Wheelbarrow on the Gravel Path and The Magic Blue Boot run about two minutes, with simple repeated lines about helping and sharing.

Which story helps a child who struggles to share?

Try The Kites' Song, where Can shares his rainbow kite's string when Ada's kite dips, or The Mystery of the Glowing Stone, where a stone glows brighter each time it is passed on. Both are short and very concrete for ages 4-6.

Do you have friendship stories for older children?

A smaller set, yes. The Happy Heart of the Mountains and The Map of the Mysterious Castle suit ages 7-9, while The Secret of the Lost Map and The Slow Turtle and the Fast Bird suit ages 10-12, with friends combining different strengths.

Is there a story about friends who are different from each other?

In The Happy Heart of the Mountains, Mira from the Alps befriends Lara, who uses a wheelchair. In The Slow Turtle and the Fast Bird, Shelly swims the river while Dash finds a secret path, and neither could reach the Sun Fruit alone.

How can teachers use these stories?

Play one at the start of term or after a playground disagreement, then ask 'What would you have done?' Each book page also has a PDF download if you want a printed copy for a class display.

How is this different from the Emotions and Values page?

Friendship stories focus on what happens between characters: sharing, helping, playing together. Emotions and Values leans on a child's inner world, such as patience, courage and conscience. Some books appear on both pages.

Friendship Stories for Kids: Sharing, Helping and Taking Turns

About this genre

Friendship stories show children what being a good friend looks like: sharing a kite string, taking turns on a swing, helping someone carry a heavy load. With more than 90 books, this is one of the biggest shelves on the site. Most are one-to-three-minute audio stories for toddlers and preschoolers, with longer teamwork adventures for ages 7-12.

What is on this shelf

Friendship often starts with one small gesture. Ela the swallow lifts a giant leaf off the ants’ path. Clatter the wheelbarrow carries seeds, apples and leaves for three different friends. Prudence the crow loses her cheese to a flattering fox, and in this telling he ends up sharing it. These stories slow those moments down so children can see exactly what kindness between friends looks like.

The shelf is deepest for the youngest readers. Toddler stories are a minute or two long, rhythmic and repetitive, with animal friends saying good morning and passing berries around. Preschool stories add a small problem that friends solve together. For ages 7-12 there are fewer titles, but they are longer adventures with maps, riddles and mountain climbs, where each friend brings something the others lack.

Choosing and reading

Match the length to the age. One-to-two-minute stories fit a toddler’s attention; ten-to-twelve-year-olds will sit for three to six minutes of a team quest.
Link it to real life. A fight over the swing today? Read a turn-taking story tonight.
Count the friends. Ask a young child “Who did Clatter help?” and list them together. It is a small memory and language game.
Listen or print. Every book has narration, and the PDF download on the book page gives you a paper copy.
