About this genre

Adventure stories pull children forward with a question they want answered: what is behind the secret door, where does the map lead, who is making that tapping sound? This page collects free adventure books for ages 0-12, from tiny park explorations for toddlers to team mysteries for 10-12 year olds, all with read-aloud narration.

What age are these adventure stories for?
Close to half of the books here are written for 10-12 year olds, with crews of friends, compasses, telescopes and step-by-step mysteries. There are also shorter adventures for toddlers and preschoolers set in parks, gardens and woods, where the biggest twist is a new friend.
Are the adventure books too scary for young children?
The tension in these stories comes from solving a puzzle or finding the way, not from danger or violence, and they end on a warm note. With very young listeners, it still helps to pause at moments like getting lost and talk about how the character feels.
How long does an adventure story take to read?
The narration for toddler and preschool adventures runs about one to two minutes, while the longer 10-12 stories take four to five minutes. That is short enough to finish in one sitting and still have time to talk about the clues.
My child cannot read yet. Can they still follow the story?
Yes. The Listen button reads each page aloud, and with Auto Play on the book turns the page when the narration ends. The page lock keeps small hands from skipping ahead while they look at the pictures.
Can I download the adventure stories as PDF?
The stories are read and heard online. What you can download is each book's illustrations turned into coloring pages, as a PDF or image, which is a nice way to let a child redraw the map or castle after reading.
What can we do after an adventure story?
Draw the story's map together, set up a small treasure hunt at home, or ask your child to retell the adventure in their own words. In riddle books such as The Map of the Mysterious Castle, ask for a guess before turning to the answer.
