Animal Stories

Total 70 books Page 2 of 6

About this genre

Animal stories let children think about sharing, helping and patience through the eyes of a rabbit, a squirrel or a slow tortoise. This page gathers 70 free animal books, from peekaboo animal-sound books for babies to longer fables for older readers, and every one can be read online or listened to with narration.

Which ages do these animal stories suit best?
About half of the books are for ages 4-6: short, single-event stories with a warm ending. Babies and toddlers get animal-sound and peekaboo books, and readers aged 7-12 get retold fables such as the lion and the mouse.
Which animal book should I start with for a baby?
Let's Find the Baby Animals is a good first pick, at around two minutes with one animal and one sound per page. Babies start joining in with the sounds after a few readings, which turns the book into a game.
What values do the animal stories explore?
The most common themes are sharing, returning a kindness, caring for nature and being patient with someone different from you. Hazel the Curious Squirrel starts a forest cleanup, and HopHop the Sharing Rabbit splits his carrot with the cat who rescued it.
Can my child listen to the stories instead of reading?
Yes. Each page has a Listen button for narration, and Auto Play moves to the next page when the audio ends. That makes the books easy to use at bedtime or on a car trip.
How can teachers use animal stories in a preschool class?
Project a book with narration on, then ask children to act out the animal's sound or movement. You can also download the illustrations as coloring pages and use them for the second half of the activity.
How is this page different from the Animals category?
This genre page gathers stories where an animal is the hero or the theme. The Animals category lists books by their subject tag, so the two overlap but are not identical in scope or order.
