Pip and the Lake of Courage

Pip sat on a soft green moss cushion, looking out at the lake that seemed endless. The sky was deep blue, and the sun sparkled like gold on the water. Everything was beautiful, but Pip was a little worried.

This was Courage Lake. All the other creatures were playing happily in the water, but Pip preferred to stay on the shore. What if the water is too deep? he thought quietly. His heart went thump-thump.

Just then, Dash hopped over from a nearby flower. Dash was a grasshopper who was always cheerful. Hello, Pip! Why aren't you going into the water? The water looks wonderful today, perfect for swimming! he said happily.

Pip slowly lowered his head and played with his toes. I don't know, Dash, I think I'm a little scared. The lake is so big, and I am so small, he said shyly. His voice was like a whisper.

A slow and peaceful voice was heard from the other end of the lake. It was Lulu, the oldest and most patient resident of the lake. Lulu approached the shore, gliding across the water without any hurry.

Lulu came right next to Pip and looked at him with reassuring eyes. It is very natural to be afraid, my little friend, she said gently. Remember, every great swimmer starts by just touching one toe to the water.

Pip took a deep breath. Seeing Lulu and Dash looking at him with love made him feel a warmth inside. He slowly stretched his right foot forward and touched the surface of the water with a tiny movement.

Dash jumped with excitement where he stood. You're wonderful, Pip! Look, the water already loves you! It’s not scary at all, is it? he cheered. Pip really liked the cool and soft feel of the water.

Lulu moved a little closer to Pip and pointed to a water lily leaf. Come on, now take one more step. I'm here, right by your side, she said. Pip took another step towards Lulu.

Now the water was up to Pip's knees. His fear was slowly being replaced by a sweet excitement. He splashed the water lightly with his hands, and tiny droplets flew through the air like diamonds.

Dash landed on a large leaf on the water and leaned towards Pip. Look, you did it! Now you can enjoy the lake! he said. Pip gave a light hop, let himself into the water, and took his first stroke.

Pip was now swimming with his friends. With the happiness of overcoming his fear, he swam in circles in the lake. That day he realized that everything started with a tiny step. Small steps lead to great courage, he said, looking at Lulu.
