It was a sunny morning. Toby the little turtle was walking by the green pond when he saw something very interesting on the ground. It was the longest leaf he had ever seen! “Wow, what a long leaf!” Toby cried out in surprise. It took many little steps to walk from one end of the leaf to the other.

Toby looked around and started to examine other leaves. He placed a yellow, heart-shaped leaf next to his long leaf. “Hmm,” Toby said to himself, “this yellow leaf is much shorter than my long leaf.” He was excited to see the difference between the two.

Then, Toby found a huge, round lotus leaf by the water. This leaf was so wide that Toby could easily take a nap on it! He brought his long leaf next to this new friend. “This leaf is very wide,” he said, “and compared to it, my long leaf is very narrow.”

Toby had a wonderful idea. He decided to arrange all the leaves he found according to their length. “Let’s see,” he said happily, “first, I will put them all in a row.” He began to gather the leaves on a flat spot near the pond.

Toby placed the shortest yellow leaf at the very beginning of the row. “You are tiny,” he said with a smile. The short leaf marked the starting point. Now Toby knew exactly where to put the others to make his line perfect.

At the very end of the row, he placed the longest leaf he had found that day. “And the longest one goes here!” he said proudly. Now the leaves looked like a beautiful staircase, going from short to long. Toby was very happy with his work.

Just then, Toby's best friend Vivie arrived. She was curious about what Toby was doing. “Hi Toby! What are you doing with all these leaves?” Vivie asked cheerfully. Toby explained how he had sorted the long and short leaves.

Vivie said, “That looks great! But what about how wide they are? Come on, let's also sort the leaves by how wide or narrow they are!” Vivie immediately got to work and started separating the widest leaf from the others.

The two friends started working together. Toby found the narrow leaves, and Vivie organized the wide ones. Working together was much more fun than working alone. They moved the leaves here and there to create a brand new order.

Finally, they made two different arrangements. On one side were the leaves sorted by length, and on the other side were the leaves sorted by width. Vivie said, “Look Toby, these leaves are different in both length and width!”

Toby understood everything perfectly now. “Hooray!” he shouted. “Now I know what long and short mean. I can also pick out the wide and narrow ones!” Toby was so happy to learn new things while playing a game with his friend.

After playing all day, the two friends were tired. They decided to rest in the shade under the widest leaves. Accompanied by the sweet scent of the forest, they peacefully closed their eyes and fell into a sweet sleep by the green pond.
