Pip the Little Elephant and the Sandcastle
On a sunny morning, Pip the little elephant went to the lakeside. He stood on the soft, golden sand and smiled. “Today, I will build a huge, wonderful sandcastle right here!” he thought happily.
Pip got to work right away. He used his long trunk to push the sand together. Soon, a big mountain of sand grew in front of him. The sand was very dry and felt warm under the sun.
“Now it's time for the towers!” Pip said. He started adding small piles of sand to the very top of his big mountain. He wanted his castle to be the tallest one ever seen by the lake.
But suddenly, something went wrong. The tower Pip had built so carefully began to crack. With a soft “poof,” it slid all the way down to the bottom. His castle was just a flat pile again.
Pip stopped for a moment. “I won't give up,” he said to himself. “I must try again, but this time I need to find a different way.” He put his trunk to his chin and began to think very hard.
Pip walked to the edge of the lake and filled his trunk with cool water. Then, he went back and gently sprayed the water over the dry sand. The sand turned dark and became damp.
Working with wet sand was much easier! Pip pressed the sand together with his feet and trunk. This time, the sand stayed together perfectly. His towers stood tall and strong against the breeze.
Just then, Caden the turtle crawled over across the beach. “Can I help you, Pip?” he asked. Caden was carrying a collection of bright, colorful stones in his mouth. Pip was very happy to see him.
Suddenly, Chirp the little bird swooped down from the sky. Chirp brought small twigs and green leaves in his beak. “I can plant the flags on top of the towers!” he chirped neally.
With everyone helping, the castle grew bigger and bigger. Caden used his stones to make beautiful windows, and Chirp decorated the walls with his leaves. Finally, a magnificent sandcastle stood tall on the beach.
Pip looked at his friends and then at their creation. “Trying a different way was a great idea,” he said. “If I hadn't wet the sand and if you hadn't helped, this castle wouldn't be nearly as beautiful.”
As the sun began to set, Pip and Chirp sat down by the water's edge. They watched the orange light sparkle on the lake and looked at the wonderful masterpiece they had built together.
