One sunny morning, Rusty the little fox looked out of his window and saw a bright blue sky. “It is a perfect day for a picnic!” he thought. He ran to find his best friend Silas. “Silas, let’s gather everyone and go to the meadow!” Rusty said. Silas wiggled his ears with joy, ready for an adventure.

Rusty and Bramble the hedgehog started walking toward the edge of the forest. They found a beautiful meadow where the grass was tall and green. “This is the perfect spot!” Rusty said. The sun was shining brightly over the field, making everything look golden and bright.

When they reached the middle of the meadow, they stopped to set up. Silas and Bramble took a red and white checkered blanket out of the basket. They each held two corners and carefully spread it over the soft grass. The blanket flapped once in the wind before laying flat.

Now it was time for the best part: the food! Rusty took out red apples, juicy grapes, and fresh sandwiches from the basket. Silas placed the crunchy carrots he brought right in the middle of the blanket. Everything looked so delicious that they couldn't wait to start.

Just as they were about to eat, the sun started to feel very hot. It felt like a big, warm lamp in the sky. Bramble wiped his forehead and said, “Oh, it is getting too hot here!” Rusty felt the stinging heat of the sun on his back and realized they were getting too warm.

Rusty looked at his friends and saw they were not comfortable anymore. “We cannot stay here; we need to find some shade,” he said. He stood up on his hind legs and put a paw over his eyes to block the light. He looked all around the meadow for a cooler place to sit.

Soon, he spotted a giant oak tree at the edge of the meadow. Its branches were very wide, creating a large, dark circle of shade on the ground. “Silas, look! Under that big tree, it looks very cool and nice,” Rusty shouted happily.

The friends decided to move their picnic. Silas grabbed one side of the blanket, and Bramble grabbed the other. They walked slowly and carefully so the food wouldn't fall off. They worked together to carry their picnic toward the big, shady tree.

When they reached the tree, they both took a deep breath of the cool air. It felt much better! Rusty and Bramble spread the blanket down near the thick trunk of the tree. A light breeze moved through the leaves above them, cooling their faces.

Now they could finally enjoy their meal in peace. Silas took a big bite of a juicy apple, and Rusty started eating his sandwich. Sitting in the shade made them feel refreshed. They listened to the birds singing in the branches as they finished their lunch.

Rusty thought for a moment and looked at Bramble. “You know,” he said, “sometimes things don't go exactly as we planned. When the sun got too hot, changing our spot was a great idea! Paying attention to the world around us really helped.” Bramble nodded his head and smiled.

After a while, the sun moved lower in the sky and the heat became soft and gentle. Silas and Bramble ran back out into the open meadow to play. They chased each other in the golden afternoon light, happy that they had fixed their plan and saved their picnic day.
