Every morning, Puffy the Bunny loved to hop through the forest. He skipped past colorful flowers and buzzing bees, feeling the warm sun on his fur. But today, when he reached the clearing where the Great Tree stood, he stopped suddenly. Puffy twitched his little pink nose and looked up. “Something feels different today,” he thought to himself.

The Great Tree did not look happy. Its branches, which usually reached for the clouds, were now leaning toward the ground. Its leaves were curled up and looked very tired. The tree was so still that not even a single leaf rustled in the breeze. It looked like the tree had lost all its energy.

Puffy crept closer to the trunk on his tiptoes. He moved as softly as a falling feather. “Shhh,” he whispered, placing a paw over his mouth. “I think the Great Tree is in a very deep sleep. I must be extra quiet so I don't wake it up.” He walked carefully around the roots, making sure not to make a sound.

Suddenly, a cheerful voice called out from above. “Puffy! Why are you walking like a tiny mouse?” It was Puffy’s friend, Nutty the Squirrel. Nutty scurried down the bark and stopped just above Puffy’s head. Puffy jumped a little, but he kept his voice very low as he pointed to the quiet branches.

“Look, Nutty,” Puffy whispered. “The tree isn't moving at all. I think it is taking a long nap.” The two friends decided to investigate. They walked slowly around the giant trunk, looking for clues. Nutty tapped on the bark with his tiny claws, and Puffy leaned in to listen, but the tree remained silent.

Puffy knelt down near the very bottom of the tree. He noticed that the ground was very hard. When he touched the dirt, it felt hot and crumbly. “Nutty, come look at the soil!” Puffy called out. “The ground is full of tiny cracks, and it feels as dry as a desert.”

Nutty hopped down and used his strong little paws to dig into the dirt. He realized that even deep down, there was no moisture at all. “You're right, Puffy!” Nutty exclaimed. “The tree isn't just sleeping. It is very, very thirsty! It needs water to wake up and feel strong again.”

The two friends knew they had to help. They ran as fast as their legs could carry them to the sparkling stream at the edge of the forest. Puffy found a small wooden bucket, and Nutty picked up a large, empty acorn shell. They dipped their containers into the cool, clear water.

They carried the water back and poured it carefully over the thirsty roots. The dry ground drank the water up instantly. Puffy and Nutty went back and forth to the stream many times, making sure every part of the soil was wet and dark again. They worked together until they were both tired but happy.

The next morning, Puffy hurried to the clearing. He couldn't believe his eyes! The Great Tree was transformed. Its branches were stretching high toward the bright blue sky once again. The leaves had turned a beautiful, deep green and were dancing happily in the morning wind. The “sleeping” tree was finally awake.

Nutty arrived with a giant leap and a cheer. The two friends held paws and did a happy dance around their giant friend. “We did it, Nutty!” Puffy laughed. “The tree just needed a little help and some water to feel better.” They felt very proud that they had taken such good care of the forest.

From that day on, Puffy and Nutty became the tree's special guardians. They visited every single day to check the soil and play in the shade. The forest felt more peaceful than ever, and the bond between the bunny, the squirrel, and the Great Tree grew stronger with every sunrise.
