One sunny morning, a little bird named Pip was hopping happily through the forest. He spotted a giant, bright yellow leaf on the ground. The leaf was so big that it could cover Pip’s whole body! Pip looked at the leaf with wonder.

Pip leaned down and grabbed the leaf with his beak. Then, with a quick flutter, he placed the leaf right on top of his head. “Look!” he chirped. “I have a wonderful hat!” The leaf was so wide it almost covered Pip’s eyes.

Just then, his friend Flick flew over. When he saw Pip, he was surprised at first, but then he started to giggle. “Pip, that hat looks so funny!” said Flick. “I want to find a hat for myself too!”

Soon, two more friends, Truffle and Skye, joined them. They all loved Pip's hat. “Come on, friends,” said Truffle. “The forest is full of thousands of leaves. Let’s all make our own leaf hats!” The birds excitedly flew down to the ground.

Pip was busy helping his friends. He showed Flick a tiny red leaf. “Look, Flick, this is a very small leaf,” Pip said. Then he pointed to a massive green leaf nearby. “And this one is a very big leaf!”

Truffle found a leaf that was perfectly round. “Mine is round!” he chirped. Skye chose a leaf from a willow tree that was long and thin. “Mine is very long and narrow, just like a feather!” Skye said happily.

The birds had gathered so many leaves that the forest looked like a sea of colors. There were reds, yellows, oranges, and browns. Pip and Skye felt like they were swimming in a rainbow of autumn leaves.

Pip said, “Let’s put them in order!” Pip and Truffle began to line up their leaves on a fallen log. They put the smallest leaf first and the biggest leaf last. They made a perfect row from small to large.

Flick and Skye decided to sort the leaves by color. They made a pile for the red leaves, a pile for the yellow leaves, and another for the orange leaves. “Look, we have colorful hills!” they chirped.

Finally, everyone put on their favorite hat. Pip shouted, “It’s time for the Leaf Parade!” Pip and Flick started walking down the forest path at the front of the line, wearing their colorful hats and flapping their wings to the beat.

Truffle and Skye followed right behind them. Truffle’s round hat and Skye’s long hat looked very funny and beautiful. The whole forest watched their festive parade as they all sang songs together.

As the sun began to set, the birds were tired but very happy. They had learned so much about colors, sizes, and shapes while having fun. Each bird flew toward their nest wearing their special leaf hat. “Goodnight, colorful birds!”
