Little Goat Toby and the Bouncing Ball
Toby was skipping happily in the sun-warmed green meadow. While wandering among the daisies, he suddenly saw something shining. It was a giant ball, as bright as the sun and very yellow! Toby had never seen anything like it before.
Toby walked closer to the ball and touched it with his wet nose. When he gave it a gentle nudge, the ball began to roll slowly across the soft grass. Watching the ball move, Toby cried out with joy, “Maa!”
As the ball rolled, it hit a hard grey stone on the path. “Thump!” went the sound. Toby thought the ball would stop right there, but it didn't. The ball bounced off the stone and suddenly soared into the air.
With great surprise, Toby began to chase the bouncing ball. Every time the ball hit the ground, it went in a different direction. Toby jumped into the air to catch it, but each time, the ball slipped just a little further away.
Now the yellow ball started rolling fast down the slope of one of the rolling hills. Toby stood at the top of the hill and watched the ball speed up. It zigged and zagged as it rushed downward.
Toby paused for a moment and thought. He carefully followed the path the ball was taking. “If the ball keeps rolling like this,” he said to himself, “it will go right to the bottom of that big tree down there!”
Instead of chasing the ball, Toby took a shortcut and ran quickly toward the big oak tree. He reached the tree out of breath and began to wait. His heart was thumping “thump-thump” with excitement.
A few seconds later, the yellow ball came bouncing “boing-boing” right from where Toby had predicted. Toby moved just in time and stopped the ball with his soft hoof. “I found you!” he shouted happily.
Just then, Toby's best friend, Pip the lamb, came over, bleating. Toby excitedly told Pip what had happened. “Look, Pip,” he said, “predicting where the ball will go is much more fun than chasing it!”
Toby and Pip played games with the yellow ball in the meadow until the sun went down. Toby was now a master at guessing which way things would move. As the day ended, they returned home with the happiness of discovering new things.
