Little Cockatoo and the Silent Orchestra

Wake up, Kadu! The sun is big and yellow. The leaves go rustle-rustle in the breeze. The morning dew goes plip-plop on the ground. Kadu stretches his wings and listens to the morning.

Kadu flies down to the shiny blue pond. He meets Viri the frog. Viri sits on a big green lily pad. Croak, croak! says Viri. He jumps up and down with a happy rhythm.

High in the old oak tree, Kadu finds Tiki the woodpecker. Tiki is very busy. Tap-tap-tap! goes Tiki’s beak against the bark. Kadu bobs his head to the steady beat.

Kadu hops into the tall, wavy grass. There he finds Kirge the grasshopper. Kirge rubs his legs together. Shirr-shirr-shirr! The grass moves back and forth with the soft sound.

By the side of the slow river, Kadu meets Ori the duckling. Ori is practicing his morning song. Quack-quack-quack! says Ori, waddling through the soft mud.

Suddenly, the wind begins to blow through the forest. Whoosh-whoosh! Everyone is excited. Viri, Tiki, Kirge, and Ori all want to play their music at the same time.

Oh no! It is a very big noise. Viri croaks loudly and Tiki taps as fast as he can. Croak-tap-croak-tap! It is not a song yet; it is just a loud, messy jumble.

Kadu lifts his yellow crest high. He spreads his wings and says, Stop! Let’s listen. The forest grows quiet. Kadu tells his friends, We must take turns to make a song.

Kadu sings a soft, clear note. Then he points to Viri. Viri waits for the beat and then goes Croak! It sounds much better. They are making music together.

Now it is Tiki’s turn. Tap-tap! Then Kirge adds a Shirr-shirr! The sounds fit together like pieces of a puzzle. The forest is starting to dance to the rhythm.

Ori the duckling adds a gentle Quack! while the wind blows Whoosh! softly through the trees. It is a beautiful orchestra, and everyone has a turn to play.

The sun begins to set, turning the sky pink and orange. The music slows down. Kadu realizes that the quiet is also a beautiful part of the song. Sleep tight, little orchestra.
