Pip the Pygmy Goat stood in the middle of a very bright, yellow meadow. The sun was shining so hard that the grass felt warm beneath his hooves. Pip noticed that there wasn't a single shadow big enough for all his friends to rest in. He knew he had to make a plan to keep everyone cool.

Pip trotted over to Barnaby the Rabbit, who had very long, floppy ears. “Barnaby, the sun is too hot! Will you help me build a giant canopy so we can all have some shade?” Pip asked. Barnaby did a happy hop-skip and wiggled his nose. “I would love to help!” he cried.

Suddenly, Skye the Bird swooped down from the bright blue sky, her wings fluttering gracefully. “I found the perfect spot!” Skye chirped. She pointed her wing toward two old, sturdy fruit trees growing close together. Pip looked up and followed Skye as she led the way.

Before they started their big project, Barnaby and Skye took a break to drink some fresh, cool water from a small blue bowl. “It is important to rest and stay hydrated when the sun is this high,” Barnaby said. They felt much better after their refreshing drink.

Barnaby began searching the ground for large, green leaves that had fallen from the trees. These leaves would make a thick, natural roof for their shelter. Pip helped by picking up the biggest leaves he could find and stacking them in a neat pile.

Charlie the Squirrel scurried down from a tree, carrying several thin, strong branches. “These sticks will be the poles to hold our canopy up!” Charlie chattered excitedly. He laid them out on the soft ground. How many branches do you think Charlie managed to find?

Hazel the Hedgehog used her tiny paws to gather bundles of soft, dry grass from the meadow. Charlie saw her working hard and rushed over to help her pick the very best, fluffiest pieces. “This will make the ground feel like a soft pillow,” Hazel whispered.

Pip reached into his backpack and pulled out a long, lightweight piece of bright orange fabric. “I brought this to keep us extra cool!” Pip said. Hazel held one corner of the cloth while Pip began to spread it out across the grass. The bright color made them both smile.

Toby the Turtle crawled slowly into the space between the two fruit trees. He looked left and then he looked right, measuring the width with his steady steps. “I want to make sure there is enough room for every single one of us to fit,” Toby said calmly.

It was time to put it all together! Barnaby stood on his tiptoes on a small rock to reach high, while Toby helped guide the cloth from below. They carefully draped the orange fabric over the branches and tied it to the trees without hurting a single leaf.

To make the canopy look even more special, Skye and Hazel decorated the edges with sweet-smelling red flowers. Skye dropped the flowers from the air, and Hazel tucked them into the grass. They took one last sip of water and looked at their beautiful creation.

Finally, the canopy was finished! All the friends gathered in the cool, orange shade. Pip looked around at Barnaby, Skye, Charlie, Hazel, and Toby. Everyone was happy and cool. “Sharing a big shade is much better than being alone in the sun,” Pip said.
