Little Turtle Toby and the Leaf Boat
Little Toby the turtle was having a wonderful morning by the pond. The sun was warm on his shell as he waddled through the tall, green grass. Suddenly, he stopped. Right in front of him was the biggest, brightest leaf he had ever seen!
Toby looked at the big leaf and then at a small, sturdy branch lying nearby. He picked up the branch and placed it carefully on top of the leaf. He tilted his head and smiled. “This could be a boat!” he said to himself.
“Boing! Boing!” A happy sound came from the bushes. It was Toby's best friend, Viv the frog. She hopped over with a giant leap. “What are you making, Toby?” Viv asked, her big eyes blinking with excitement.
“I am making a boat, Viv!” Toby explained. Viv’s eyes widened. Together, the two friends began to push and pull the heavy leaf toward the edge of the water. It was hard work, but they were a great team.
When they reached the muddy shore, they gave one last big push. The leaf slid into the pond with a tiny splash. It didn't sink! It stayed right on top of the water, looking just like a little green ship.
Toby felt very brave. He stepped onto the muddy bank and reached out. He sat down very carefully on the edge of the leaf boat. The leaf rocked a little bit, but Toby held on tight with his little claws.
“Look at me, Viv! I'm sailing!” Toby called out. The leaf began to move slowly away from the mud. Viv stayed on the shore, cheering and waving her arms. “Go, Toby, go!” she shouted happily.
Suddenly, a gentle summer breeze began to blow. The wind caught the edge of the leaf and pushed it further out. Toby felt the cool air as his leaf boat sailed toward the middle of the big, blue pond.
After his grand adventure, the water carried the leaf back toward a patch of soft clover. Toby hopped off the leaf and onto the shore. “That was amazing!” he told Viv. “I learned that we can find toys everywhere in nature!”
Toby looked at the leaf boat one last time. He gave it a gentle nudge back into the water and let it go. Toby and Viv stood side by side, watching the little green boat float away into the sunset, ready for its next journey.
