About this genre

Bedtime stories are short, quiet books written for the last few minutes of the day. This page has short say-goodnight books for babies and toddlers plus calm stories for ages 4-9 in which the hero heads home and falls asleep; every book is free to read or play with narration.

How long should a bedtime story be?
For babies and toddlers, one to two minutes is plenty, and that is roughly how long the narration on the 0-3 books runs; the stories for ages 4-6 take a little longer. If your child asks for another, reading the same book again slowly is usually calmer than starting a new one.
Will reading on a screen at bedtime make sleep harder?
Bright screens and fast content can make winding down harder. Dimming the screen and playing only the narration, turning the device face down to just listen, or finishing the book before lights out are all reasonable middle grounds.
What ages are these books for?
Some are short goodnight books for babies and toddlers, and most are animal stories for ages 4-6 that end with the hero falling asleep. There are a few calm stories for ages 7-9 as well. Each book card shows its age group.
Should I read it myself or use the narration?
Either works. Many families play the narration for the first few nights and then switch to reading in their own voice; yours is the most familiar sound, and the narration keeps the routine going on evenings when you are tired.
Up to what age do goodnight books work?
Repetitive say-goodnight books work best roughly between ages one and four, when children memorize the order and start saying the lines with you. Older children usually prefer a story with a small plot that still ends quietly.
What should come after the bedtime story?
When the book ends, dim the lights and say goodnight to a few things in the room just as the story did, so the book becomes the closing line of the routine. Avoid starting a new activity afterwards.
