Whenever Sophie looked at her school’s wide but grey-looking yard, she always imagined the same thing: colorful flowers and trees reaching for the sky. That evening, she sat at her desk, pulled out a large piece of drawing paper, and began to design her “Little Friendship Forest” project. On the paper, she painted a sunny garden and smiling trees.

The next day, Sophie shared her project with her best friend, Oliver. During recess, the duo began to inspect the sunniest corners of the schoolyard. While Oliver took notes in his notebook, Sophie measured the width of the ground with her steps. This was the perfect place to build a tiny forest.

Planting trees wasn't just about digging holes. Maya and Liam went to the library to research the most suitable trees for their school's climate. While Maya examined acorns in a large encyclopedia, Liam drew the shapes of plane tree leaves in his notebook. “We must choose sturdy trees,” Maya said.

Sophie tucked her project folder under her arm and knocked on the door of the principal, Mr. Sterling. When Mr. Sterling saw the children’s green plan, he smiled over his glasses. “This is a wonderful idea, Sophie!” he said. The school administration promised to support the children by providing saplings and tools.

The long-awaited day had finally arrived: Sapling Planting Day! There was a sweet rush of excitement in the garden. Oliver wore a bright yellow hat, and Maya was organizing who would do what with a task list in her hand. Everyone had a job, and everyone was very excited.

The soil needed to be prepared first. Sophie and Liam began to aerate the ground with their small trowels. The earth smelled fresh and damp. As Liam examined a worm that popped out of the dirt, Sophie smiled and said, “The soil is very healthy; our saplings will be very happy here.”

Oliver and Liam carefully carried the small pine and plane tree saplings in their pots. The saplings were still very small, but their branches were a vibrant green. As Oliver carefully removed a sapling from its pot, Liam helped him to ensure they didn't hurt the roots.

Once the saplings were placed in the ground, it was time for the most important part: the “water of life.” Sophie and Maya filled their blue watering cans and slowly poured water at the base of the saplings. “We must check every day to see if they are thirsty,” Sophie said. Maya smiled happily as she watched the water meet the soil.

By the end of the day, the garden had completely changed. It was no longer a grey space but a garden of hope filled with saplings. Oliver and Maya gave each other a high-five in front of the last tree they planted. “We did it!” they cheered. The Little Friendship Forest was now real, just like in the drawings.

Sophie knew that saplings didn't grow just by being planted. They needed care and attention. In the evening sun, she gently stroked the leaf of one of the saplings. “We will help you grow,” she whispered. This forest would rise with their patience and love.

The following week, Sophie and Liam prepared a large “Care Schedule” on a wooden board. Using colorful markers, they wrote down which class would water the saplings and clear the weeds each day. Liam cheered up the calendar by drawing suns and clouds in the corners.

Sophie closed her eyes and imagined the future. Years later, these saplings would be massive trees. Children would read books in their shade, and birds would build nests in their branches. Sophie smiled; every sapling they planted was the most beautiful gift of friendship left for the future.
