Little kitten Whiskers could not sleep at all that night. When she looked out the window, she saw a huge, glowing moon in the sky. The moon shone like a silver plate, filling the room with a soft, gentle light. Whiskers wondered, “I wonder how the moonlight looks in the garden?” and climbed up onto the windowsill.

Whiskers quietly slipped through the open door and into the garden. The night was not scary at all; everything was painted in a magical silver color. The grass sparkled under the moon, and a light breeze made the leaves rustle softly. Whiskers walked to the middle of the garden with curious steps and took a deep breath of the fresh night air.

Just then, she noticed a dark shape moving at her feet. “What is that?” Whiskers wondered, startled. This shape went wherever she went and stopped whenever she stopped. When Whiskers turned right, the shape turned right. When Whiskers lifted her left paw, the shape lifted its own paw. Whiskers really liked this new friend.

Whiskers began to play with her shadow. She spun around, and the shadow spun too. Suddenly, she jumped high into the air, trying to catch it. But no matter how fast she jumped, the shadow stayed right beneath her. Whiskers purred with delight as she did tumbles on the grass.

“Hello there, little kitten!” a voice called from above. When Whiskers looked up, she saw Hoot the Owl sitting on a tree branch. Hoot had big, soft feathers and bright, glowing eyes. Whiskers said excitedly, “Look, Hoot! I found a new friend, but I can't seem to catch him!”

Hoot smiled and glided down from the tree. “That is your shadow, Whiskers,” he said wisely. “When the moonlight shines behind you, your body blocks the light, and this dark shape appears on the ground. Look, let me show you how I block the light with my wings.” Hoot held his wings up toward the moon to show Whiskers how the shadow was made.

Hoot began to use his wings to make different shapes on the ground. “Watch this,” he said. When he joined his wings together and moved them, the shadow on the ground looked like a giant bird in flight. Whiskers watched in awe. Hoot knew exactly how much fun playing with shadows could be.

Whiskers wanted to try it too. She lifted her paws and held them up like ears. “Look, Hoot, I made a rabbit!” she cried. The shadow on the ground looked just like a rabbit with long ears. As Whiskers moved her paws, the shadow rabbit wiggled its ears.

Seeing their fun, Pip the Rabbit hopped out from the bushes. “Can I join in?” he asked. Pip came over to Whiskers and wiggled his nose, casting the shadow of his own real, long ears onto the grass. Whiskers and Pip stood side by side, letting their shadows overlap.

Spike the Hedgehog also crawled slowly toward them from under the tree. Hoot flapped his wings to make a butterfly shadow, while Spike rolled into a ball, turning his shadow into a big, round circle. The garden was filled with shadow shapes dancing under the moonlight.

As the night went on, Whiskers began to feel sleepy. Hoot placed a wing gently on Whiskers’ shoulder and said, “It is time to rest now, my little friend.” Whiskers thanked her friends. She had learned how magical the moonlight and shadows could be. She said goodbye and walked slowly back toward the house.

Whiskers curled up in her soft, cozy bed. Before closing her eyes, she looked at the last bit of moonlight peeking through the window. Her shadow was right there by the side of her bed, keeping her company. Whiskers purred happily and fell into a deep sleep, dreaming of dancing shadows.
