Leo loved exploring the dusty shelves in his grandfather Arthur’s study. One day, inside an old box on the bottom shelf, he found a brass watch with beautiful engravings. The watch was silent; there was no “tick” or “tock” to be heard. When Leo blew the dust off, he noticed how complex the tiny metal parts behind the glass were.

He wanted to open the watch and look inside right away, but he was afraid of damaging the tiny pieces. “Grandpa must know its secret,” he thought. Holding the watch carefully in his palm, he ran to the living room to find Grandfather Arthur. Arthur looked up over his glasses and smiled at Leo.

Arthur’s eyes brightened as he took the watch. “This watch is very old, Leo,” he said. “Repairing broken watches was my favorite hobby when I was young. Every watch has its own heart and its own story.” Leo was surprised and excited to hear about his grandfather’s knowledge of old timepieces.

They sat down together at the workbench. With a tiny screwdriver, Arthur carefully opened the back cover of the watch. Inside were dozens of tiny, golden gears interlocking with one another. Leo couldn't believe how so many parts could fit into such a small space.

Leo gently touched the largest gear with his finger. “Why are they all touching each other, Grandpa?” he asked. “Because every part helps the other, Leo,” Arthur replied. “If one turns, the other turns too. No gear can show the time all by itself.”

Arthur pulled a wooden box from a drawer. Inside were large plastic gears that looked like the ones in the watch, but much bigger. “Come on, let’s build our own system,” he said. Leo loved the idea of making his own “watch motor” with these colorful pieces.

Leo began to line the gears up on a wooden board. With his grandfather's help, he expected the other gears to move when he turned a handle. He placed the pieces close together with great care, and they secured them with small pins.

Leo turned the handle of the system they had prepared with great excitement. But there was a problem! Because the gears were fitted too tightly together, the system jammed and wouldn't move. Leo’s face fell. “Why aren't they turning, Grandpa? Did I do it wrong?” he asked.

“They just need a little room to breathe,” Arthur said. Leo widened the distance between the gears slightly and changed the arrangement. When he turned the handle again, all the gears began to dance at once with a clicking sound. Leo shouted joyfully, “I did it! They’re all moving together!”

Leo looked at the old brass watch again. The watch still wasn't working, but now he had solved the secret of that silent complexity inside. Mechanical systems worked through the perfect harmony of small parts with one another. They might not have repaired the watch, but Leo finally understood how “time” worked.
