Leo loved the small wooden bridge over the stream at the edge of the neighborhood. Every day on his way home from school, he would cross this bridge and watch the flowing water. But that day, he noticed something wrong. One of the boards in the middle of the bridge was cracked and loose. Looking closely, he saw a deep hole underneath.

Leo ran home without losing any time. His father, Thomas, was busy with the flowers in the garden. “Dad, come quickly! A board on the bridge is broken; someone could trip and fall while crossing,” he said, out of breath. Thomas immediately dropped what he was doing. He was both surprised and proud that Leo had been so observant.

Thomas called the local council to report the situation. But until the teams arrived, they needed to make sure no one got hurt. Leo called his best friend Mia for help. The two of them spread a large piece of cardboard on the ground and brought out their colorful paints. They began preparing a huge, bright sign that read “CAUTION! BROKEN BOARD.”

They took the sign they had prepared and went to the bridge. They tied the sign to the railing at the entrance of the bridge where everyone could see it. Leo and Mia now waited at the head of the bridge, warning their neighbors passing by to be careful. A small precaution could prevent a big accident.

Before long, an orange truck pulled up next to the bridge. Out stepped Mr. Miller, wearing a reflective vest. When Mr. Miller saw the sign they had prepared, he smiled. “You've done a great job, kids,” he said. “Without your warning, our job would have been much harder.”

Leo didn't leave Mr. Miller's side for a moment. He asked curiously, “How will you fix this board?” Mr. Miller took a brand-new, shiny piece of wood from the truck. “Look Leo, this is oak; it's very resistant to water and pressure. First, we'll remove the old one, then we'll screw the new one in securely,” he explained.

Mr. Miller got to work. He carefully removed the old, broken board. The sounds he made blended with the murmur of the stream. Leo watched with admiration how fast and skillful a craftsman's hands were. With every move, Mr. Miller emphasized that the work must be done safely.

When the new board was placed and screwed in, the bridge looked even sturdier than before. Mr. Miller called Leo's father over. “Here you go, Thomas; let this observant young man and you take the first crossing,” he said. Leo and Thomas, holding hands, walked safely across the renewed bridge.

The bridge was repaired, but the sign Leo and Mia had prepared could no longer stay there. Mr. Miller gave the sign back to Leo. “Let this be your first certificate of achievement,” he said. That evening, Leo hung the sign on his bedroom wall. This piece of cardboard would remind him how valuable it is to notice a problem and take steps towards a solution.

The next day, Leo and Mia met at the park. Leo now looked at his surroundings with a completely different eye. He didn't just see trees and birds; he immediately noticed a loose paving stone, a burnt-out street light, or someone in need of help. He was now the small but most observant watcher of his neighborhood.
