Wally the Little Walrus and the Colors on the Ice

Wally the little walrus was sitting on the big, white ice. He looked down and saw something magical. The sun was making blue, yellow, and pink sparkles on the frozen ground. They looked like a rainbow resting on the snow. Wally wondered where all these beautiful colors came from.

Suddenly, his friend Pip the seal pup wiggled over. “Wally, look!” Pip barked happily. “There is a golden light inside this little puddle!” The two friends carefully moved to the edge of the water to see the treasure.

The light hitting the water left a bright yellow spot on the ice. Pip shouted, “This color looks so warm, just like a cozy blanket!” Wally smiled. What color do you think this glow looks like? It was as bright as a lemon!

Just then, Penny the penguin came sliding across the ice on her belly. “Hello, friends!” she chirped. “Have you seen the deep blue hiding in the shadows of that ice hill?” The three friends looked over at the tall ice blocks nearby.

Penny loved the way the light turned dark blue in the shade. Wally noticed that the edges of the ice looked clear and bright, like glass. The light was playing hide-and-seek inside the frozen water.

High above, Larry the seagull soared down and landed gently on the ice. As he flapped his wings to land, tiny drops of water splashed into the air. Wally watched the droplets fly and started to giggle.

The tiny water droplets hanging in the air met the sunlight and sparkled like diamonds. “Look!” Larry cried. “There are tiny rainbows inside the drops!” Which color is your favorite in a rainbow?

Across the snow, a white ball of fluff came hopping along. It was Tilly the arctic hare! She hopped up to Pip and asked, “Did you notice the sweet pink glow on the snow?” The snow was changing color as the sun started to go down.

Tilly looked very cute with her soft fur standing in the pink light. Wally realized that the world was changing right before his eyes. “The colors are everywhere, and they are so beautiful!” he said. They all gathered together in a safe corner of the ice.

Suddenly, a gentle voice came from the sea. It was Noah the whale, lifting his head out of the water. “If you look from under the waves,” Noah sang, “the bottom of the ice looks bright green!” Wally was surprised to see a new color deep in the ocean.

As the sun sank lower, the entire sky turned bright orange and gold. Noah and Penny watched as a golden path appeared right on top of the water. Everything looked different than it did in the morning.

Wally looked at his friends and said, “The light is the same, but every surface shows it in a different way.” Tilly nodded; when they looked at things from a new side, they found new beauty. The happy friends watched the dance of colors until the stars came out.
