Lily loved watching her garden come alive every spring. But this year, she noticed something different. The sky was filled with what looked like orange and black patterned flying leaves. Dozens, even hundreds of butterflies were gliding in the same direction. The branches of the old plane tree in her garden looked as if they had blossomed with resting butterflies. Lily stood on her tiptoes and watched this miraculous sight with admiration.

“Where do so many butterflies come from, and where are they going?” Lily wondered. She asked her family at dinner, but no one was quite sure. To satisfy her curiosity, Lily sat down at her desk. Looking out into the darkness from her window, she decided to solve the big secret behind those tiny wings. Perhaps these little travelers had a long story to tell.

The next day, Lily rushed to the school library. She piled the thickest nature encyclopedias and books with colorful wing pictures on her table. As she turned the pages one by one, she realized that butterflies were not just insects fluttering in gardens. Some books had complex maps and mysterious routes. Lily adjusted her glasses and lost herself among the lines.

Lily was amazed by her research results. Some butterfly species traveled thousands of kilometers, just like migratory birds! Those delicate wings crossed oceans, high mountains, and vast cities to travel far away. This long journey was called “migration.” Lily immediately noted this information in her notebook. She couldn't believe how strong these tiny creatures were.

“If my garden is on their migration path, I must help them,” Lily said. She immediately called her father, Arthur, to the garden. They began to make a plan. The butterflies needed fresh nectar to rest and gather energy along the way. Mr. Arthur smiled at the garden plan Lily had drawn. “Great idea, Lily, we will host them in the best way possible,” he said.

When the weekend arrived, Lily and her mother, Sarah, got to work in the garden. Lily had chosen seeds of native flowers she had researched because butterflies loved plants native to their own regions the most. While Mrs. Sarah dug the soil, Lily carefully planted purple and yellow flower seedlings. Working with the soil was tiring, but thinking that the butterflies would take a break here made Lily very happy.

Once the garden was ready, Lily started keeping a small green observation notebook. Every day after school, she went out to the garden and noted which butterfly landed on which flower. Sometimes she waited patiently for minutes without moving at all. She always had a magnifying glass and colored pencils with her. She drew every new insect and butterfly she saw in her notebook in great detail.

One day, her friend Mia came to the garden. Lily showed her the notebook and explained how she distinguished different butterfly species. “Look Mia, you can tell this is a 'Monarch' butterfly from the white spots on its wings,” she said. Mia listened with admiration. Lily had discovered not only the butterflies but also the life cycle in the garden. Now every flap of a wing had a meaning.

Lily's excitement spread to the school. Together with her teacher and friends, they organized a “Butterfly Observation Day” in the school garden. Lily told her friends what she had learned about migration routes. Mia and the other children also planted flowers that butterflies would love in the school garden. Now the whole school had become a safe harbor waiting for these tiny travelers.

When the next spring arrived, Lily saw the first orange wings in her garden. Her heart pounded with joy. The flowers she planted had grown, and her garden had turned into a feast of colors. She now knew how important even a small garden could be as a living space for creatures. While the butterflies took a break at this stop Lily had prepared with love, Lily felt the freedom in their wings.
