It was a sunny afternoon. Leo was kneeling by the edge of a small stream that ran past the garden, listening to the gentle gurgling of the water. Suddenly, he noticed something fascinating. Small, smooth stones in the middle of the stream were changing the direction of the flow as if by magic. The water swirled around the stones, sometimes creating tiny bubbles as it veered off in a new direction. “I wonder how these stones draw the path for the water?” Leo asked himself.

Just then, his best friend Lily arrived. Leo excitedly showed her how the water was moving. They both leaned over the stream together. Lily said, “Look, Leo! When the water passes that big flat stone, it speeds up, but it leaves a calm spot right behind it!” The two friends began to observe with great curiosity how the current danced with every single stone.

Leo had an idea. He reached into the water, picked up a small stone, and moved it slightly to the side. “Look, Lily! Now that I put the stone here, the water flows the other way!” he shouted. Lily moved another stone too. Moving the stones really did change the route of the water. They had become the architects of the little river, deciding which way the water should go.

Just then, they saw a tiny creature scurry away from under one of the stones they had moved. As they shifted more rocks, the small homes at the bottom of the water were being disturbed. Lily paused. “Leo, I don’t think these stones are just for directing the water,” she whispered. “They are also homes for little bugs and fish. We might be ruining their houses by moving them.”

Their teacher, Ms. Mentis, came over to join them. She had noticed the children’s curiosity and their sudden worry. “Children, exploring nature is wonderful,” Ms. Mentis said with a kind smile. “But we must not disturb the balance. If you want to safely experiment with how water flows, we can use the special container I’ve prepared in our science corner.” Leo and Lily loved the idea.

When they returned to the classroom, they got straight to work. They placed a long, transparent water channel model on the table that Ms. Mentis had brought. They filled it with clean sand and placed artificial obstacles inside. This model was just like the stream in the garden, but here, there was no risk of harming any living creatures. Leo and Lily began to build their own little river in this safe space.

It was time for the experiment! Leo began to slowly pour water into one end of the channel. Lily arranged stones of different sizes in the middle. When they placed the stones diagonally, the water flowed in zig-zags; when they lined them up, a tiny pond formed. They watched with excitement as the water took different paths depending on how the stones were arranged.

“I wonder when the water flows the fastest?” Leo asked. Lily immediately pulled out a stopwatch. They placed a small, bright yellow cork at the end of the channel. They measured that the cork moved quickly when the channel was clear, but when they arranged the stones to create a narrow passage, the water jetted through and pushed the cork even faster. They were making a scientific discovery!

When the experiment was over, Lily and Leo sat down at the table to compare their results. They took notes on a piece of paper, marking which stone arrangement led where and how fast the water moved. “Look,” Lily said, “the smoother the obstacles, the easier the water flows.” Leo added, “And the water is always stronger in narrow spaces!”

Ms. Mentis came over to review their work. “You’ve done a wonderful job,” she said. Leo looked up and said, “Teacher, I learned something very important today. When we do a scientific experiment, we should satisfy our curiosity, but we also have to be responsible toward the living things and the environment around us. Choosing a safe place was the right thing to do.”

After school, Leo and Lily went back to the stream. This time, they didn't touch the stones. They simply watched the water flow along its own path and saw their little friends under the stones resting in peace. It was wonderful to be curious about nature and try to understand it, but it was even more valuable to observe it without causing any harm.

Leo smiled as he walked home. The little water channel in the classroom hadn't just taught him a physics lesson; it had taught him the first step toward being a scientist full of love and respect. As the little river bridge builders, they now knew that great discoveries could be made while protecting nature at the same time.
