About this age group

Story books for ages 7-9 support 1st, 2nd and 3rd graders as they move from sounding out words to reading on their own. The 134 books on this page have 3-5 minutes of narration and feature school clubs, simple experiments and class projects. Every book is free to read, hear, quiz yourself on, and download as a PDF.

Which grades are the 7-9 books for?
They generally suit 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade readers. Early in 1st grade, read along with the narration; by 3rd grade, read silently first and then listen to check.
How long does a book for ages 7-9 take?
Narration usually runs 3-4 minutes. For a 2nd grader reading independently, that's a 10-15 minute reading session.
How can I check reading comprehension?
Many book pages include a short interactive story quiz. Afterwards, asking your child to sum up the main idea in one sentence is a good habit.
Where should a reluctant 8-year-old start?
Short, curiosity-driven books that end with an experiment, like Leo and the Little Paper Plane Experiment, are a good way in. Listening to the narration first lowers the difficulty.
Which books work for whole-class reading?
School-based stories such as Leo and the Little Question Box or Daisy and the Little Science Club are great launch pads for a similar class project. Open the book on the classroom screen with narration.
Can I download 1st-3rd grade story books as PDFs?
Yes. The Download PDF button on each book page lets you save the full book or only the pages you want to print.
