About this genre

Fantasy stories take children somewhere with its own rules: through a wardrobe into endless winter, up a beanstalk to a cloud world, or aboard a starry train that only runs at night. Most of the 20 books suit ages 7-12, including Wizard of Oz and Narnia retellings, and all can be read online or played as audio.

How is fantasy different from a fairy tale?
Fairy tales usually follow a familiar pattern with a clear lesson. Fantasy builds a world with its own logic, like the fading crystal in The Lost Lantern Forest or the glowing rings of The Time Tree. For classic retellings, see the Fairy Tales page.
Which fantasy books suit younger children?
For ages 4-6, try Pip's Big Little Adventure, where a tiny boy leaves his mushroom home, or The Colorful Bridge in the Sky, where Atlas searches for the rainbow. Both are around two minutes long.
Are any of these stories frightening?
The dragon in The Dragon and the Brave Boy turns out to be friendly and blows sparkly smoke rings. The White Witch in The Door to the Snow Realm is a more serious villain, which is why that book is tagged ages 10-12.
Are there retellings of classic fantasy novels?
Yes. Magic at the Heart of the Emerald Road follows the yellow brick road from The Wizard of Oz, The Door to the Snow Realm draws on The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and The Boy Who Climbed to the Sky echoes Jack and the Beanstalk.
Do these stories teach anything?
Often the magic carries a real idea. The Empathy Glasses lets a boy see what friends feel, and Leo and the Light of Conscience gives him a compass that points to the right choice until he has to decide alone.
How long does each story take?
Audio runs from under a minute for the youngest titles to about six and a half minutes for The Color Experiment in the Time Garden. Most of the 7-12 picks take two and a half to four minutes, which suits one chapter-sized sitting.
